MASSIVE CROTON WATER TREATMENT PLANT PROJECT IN THE BRONX TO USE ADVANCED WATERPROOFING TECHNOLOGY XYPEX

The construction of the new 12-acre Croton Water Treatment Plant is currently underway in the Bronx. A tight schedule, complex geographical challenges, and the vast nature of the project have combined to make its construction a delicate balancing act. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and general contractor SKANSKA have made waterproofing a key priority by choosing a ground-breaking technology provided by a trusted local source. Project manager Michael McLaughlin chose Xypex waterproofing technology offered by specialty construction product distributor Screws and More (SAM) for its advanced expertise, solid reputation, and proven track record in waterproofing.

The plant will be built underneath Van Cortlandt Park on a tight schedule with an estimated construction duration of seven years. It will eventually filter 2 90 million gallons of water per day from the Croton Reservoir, the oldest of three active systems that provides drinking water to New York City. The Croton system provides about 10 percent of the city's average daily demand of 1.4 billion gallons per day and as much as 30 percent during droughts when the Catskill watershed runs low. The project's complex construction challenges include the drilling, blasting, and excavation of 70,000 cubic yards of rock and the construction of two connecting water tunnels to the plant, which are in close proximity to the public, as well as key highway and mass transit facilities.

Of all the factors to consider in this complex project, waterproofing is the most important. McLaughlin needed to find a proven product that is readily available in large quantities from a convenient source. He decided on Xypex waterproofing technology because of its strong reputation for durable and secure concrete waterproofing and his relationship with its trusted distributor. Xypex uses a ground-breaking crystalline technology that remains effective in every climactic challenge, and in delicate and complex construction situations. For a job of this magnitude, there is no room for error in waterproofing. Xypex was the clear choice for its proven track record. The project is currently using twelve pallets of Xypex and plans to use another twenty four as the project goes on.

McLaughlin chose Xypex not only for its excellent reputation as a leading waterproofing technique but also because of its availability through a trusted local source, Screws and More (SAM) in Elmsford, NY. SAM is a local specialty construction product distributor specializing in waterproofing materials. SAM offers an impressive variety of construction products and has a reputation for personal, trusted service. Al Guippone, owner of SAM, is confident that SKANSKA made the right choice by going with XYPEX for the project. "I have 25 years of experience in the waterproofing industry and for a project of this size, Xypex is the right way to go. I'm happy to supply the product and to be able to help the state of New York with this significant project."
